Hair Transplant in Turkey vs the USA: Cost, Travel and Aftercare Compared

Last updated: November 7, 2026 · By the Editorial Team · Editorial guide, not sponsored

Short answer: A hair transplant usually costs less in Turkey. All-inclusive packages in our Turkey price set cost $2,020–$3,590 (€1,800–€3,200) and usually include hotel nights and airport transfers. In the US, a 2026 survey of practices put the national range at $6,000 to $15,000 or more for the procedure alone. The procedure and recovery are the same in both countries; the differences are price, a 9–10 hour flight, insurance and how follow-up is arranged.

This guide compares the two options using our own price set and guidance from the CDC, the US State Department, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). It does not recommend either country or any clinic.

Cost: Turkey vs USA

US prices vary by city and by the number of grafts. A 2026 survey based on financing requests at partner practices gave a national range of $6,000 to $15,000 or more, with city averages from $7,000 (€6,240) to $15,000 (€13,360) and a median of about $9,780 (€8,710) across 12 metro areas. A 2025 price comparison put the US average at $13,610 (€12,130) for 2,500 grafts, or $5.44 (€4.85) per graft.

In Turkey, most clinics sell all-inclusive packages. Entry packages in our price set cost $2,020–$3,590 (€1,800–€3,200), with a median of $2,680 (€2,390). Most of the packages in our set do not change with the number of grafts.

How clinics and doctors are checked

In the US

State medical boards license all US physicians. The Federation of State Medical Boards’ DocInfo tool lets you look up a doctor’s license, specialty certification and any public disciplinary actions. The ASPS suggests asking about board certification, how many procedures the surgeon has done, hospital privileges and whether the facility is accredited. The AAD advises choosing a doctor who understands hair loss and performs hair transplants regularly.

In Turkey

Hair transplant units in Türkiye operate with a Ministry of Health permit under a dedicated 2023 regulation, and facilities that treat international patients need a health tourism authorization. Our guides on hair transplant safety in Turkey and how to choose a clinic explain what to check.

Travel, insurance and flying home

  • Flight time: about 9–10 hours nonstop from New York (JFK) to Istanbul.
  • See a travel medicine specialist: the CDC recommends a visit 4–6 weeks before your trip.
  • Insurance: the US State Department notes that Medicare and Medicaid do not cover care abroad and that most hospitals abroad do not accept US insurance. It strongly recommends supplemental insurance that covers medical evacuation.
  • Records: the CDC advises getting a complete copy of your medical records in English before you return.
  • Follow-up at home: the CDC recommends arranging follow-up care at home before you travel.
  • Flying home: ask your surgeon when it is safe for you to fly. The CDC advises longer waits after major surgery.

The US State Department’s country information page for Türkiye also covers medical care, payment and insurance. Read it before you travel.

Recovery and aftercare

Recovery is the same in both countries. The AAD says the procedure usually takes 4–8 hours under local anesthesia, transplanted hairs shed between 2 and 8 weeks, and most people see results at 6–9 months, some at 12. The ASPS says most people return to work and light activity after several days, and stitches, if used, come out after a week to 10 days.

If you travel, plan follow-up before you go. Ask whether follow-up is done by photo or video, and who you should contact if you have a concern once you are home. Our hair transplant recovery guide covers aftercare day by day.

How to decide

If this matters most to youPoints to weigh
Lowest total costCompare a Turkey package plus flights, insurance and time off with written US quotes for the same number of grafts.
In-person follow-upA US clinic is closer to home. If you travel, ask how follow-up works remotely and arrange a local doctor.
Time away from homeA trip to Turkey usually means a few nights there (2–5 in our price set), a long flight each way and recovery at home.
Language and paperworkMake sure the consultation, consent form and aftercare instructions are in English.

Questions to ask any clinic

  • Who will examine me, and who will perform each step of the procedure?
  • How many hair transplants has the surgeon done?
  • Which technique do you recommend for me, and why?
  • How many grafts do you plan, and what does the price include?
  • What follow-up will you provide, and who do I contact if something goes wrong?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos of patients with hair like mine?
