Hair Transplant in Turkey vs the UK: Cost, Regulation and Aftercare Compared
Last updated: November 7, 2026 · By the Editorial Team · Editorial guide, not sponsored
Short answer: A hair transplant usually costs less in Turkey. All-inclusive packages in our Turkey price set cost $2,020–$3,590 (€1,800–€3,200; £1,500–£2,670) and usually include hotel nights and airport transfers. In the UK, the NHS says a hair transplant can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £30,000. The procedure and recovery are the same in both countries; the differences are price, travel, insurance and how follow-up is arranged.
This guide compares the two options using our own price set and guidance from the NHS, GOV.UK and the Care Quality Commission. It does not recommend either country or any clinic. The right choice depends on your budget, your time and how you want aftercare to work.

Cost: Turkey vs UK
Prices in the UK vary widely. The NHS gives a range of £1,000 to £30,000. A 2026 survey of UK clinic prices found an average of £4,820 ($6,490; €5,780) for 1,500 grafts, with prices from £1,995 to £15,000 and an average of £3.25 per graft. A 2025 price comparison put the UK average at £2.35 per graft, so per-graft figures depend on the source.
In Turkey, most clinics sell all-inclusive packages. Entry packages in our price set cost $2,020–$3,590 (€1,800–€3,200; £1,500–£2,670), with a median of $2,680 (€2,390; £1,990). Most of the packages in our set do not change with the number of grafts.

How clinics and surgeons are checked
In the UK
The NHS says all independent clinics that provide cosmetic surgery in England must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It also advises checking that the surgeon is on the General Medical Council (GMC) register with a licence to practise, and whether they are a full or affiliate member of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS). Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulators.
In Turkey
Hair transplant units in Türkiye operate with a Ministry of Health permit under a dedicated 2023 regulation, and facilities that treat international patients need a health tourism authorization. GOV.UK links to HealthTürkiye, the Ministry’s list of approved providers. Our guides on hair transplant safety in Turkey and how to choose a clinic explain what to check.
Travel, insurance and flying home
- Flight time: about 4 hours nonstop from London Heathrow to Istanbul.
- Health cover: GOV.UK says UK EHIC and GHIC cards are not valid in Turkey and advises insurance that covers local treatment and medical evacuation.
- Travel insurance: GOV.UK says standard travel insurance does not normally cover elective surgery abroad. Check the policy wording before you book.
- Talk to your doctor: GOV.UK suggests discussing your plans with your UK doctor before you travel.
- Two consultations: the NHS recommends having two consultations before surgery abroad, with time to think in between.
- Flying home: the NHS notes that flying soon after major surgery raises the risk of blood clots. It gives no set waiting time for hair transplants, so ask your surgeon when it is safe for you to fly.
Recovery and aftercare
Recovery is the same in both countries. According to the NHS, most people take 1–2 weeks off work, bandages come off after 2–5 days, and non-dissolvable stitches are removed after 10–14 days. The transplanted hair falls out after a few weeks, new growth starts at about 4 months, and full results take 10–18 months.
If you travel, plan follow-up before you go. The NHS advises checking what aftercare the clinic provides and how it will be arranged once you are home. Ask whether follow-up is done by photo or video, and who you should contact if you have a concern. Our hair transplant recovery guide covers aftercare day by day.
How to decide
| If this matters most to you | Points to weigh |
|---|---|
| Lowest total cost | Compare a Turkey package plus flights, insurance and time off with written UK quotes for the same number of grafts. |
| In-person follow-up | A UK clinic is closer to home. If you travel, ask how follow-up works remotely. |
| Time away from home | A trip to Turkey usually means a few nights there (2–5 in our price set) plus recovery at home. |
| Language and paperwork | Make sure the consultation, consent form and aftercare instructions are in a language you understand. |
Questions to ask any clinic
The NHS suggests asking these questions wherever you have the procedure:
- What are your qualifications, and how many hair transplants have you done?
- How many of your patients have had complications?
- Which technique do you recommend for me, and why?
- What follow-up will you provide if something goes wrong?
- What are your patient satisfaction rates?
