DHI Hair Transplant in Turkey: How It Works, Cost and Results

Last updated: November 7, 2026 · By the Editorial Team · Editorial guide, not sponsored

Short answer: DHI (direct hair implantation) is a form of FUE in which each graft is loaded into an implanter pen that makes the incision and places the graft in one motion. In Turkey, all-inclusive DHI packages cost $3,690–$8,980 (€3,290–€8,000) at the Ministry-authorized clinics whose prices we track, usually for 1,500–3,500 grafts. Recovery and results follow the same timeline as FUE.

This guide explains how DHI works, where the implanter pen came from, how DHI compares with FUE and Sapphire FUE, and what it costs in Turkey. We do not book treatment or take referral fees.

What is a DHI hair transplant?

DHI uses the same graft harvesting as FUE: follicular units are excised one at a time from the back and sides of the scalp. The difference is the placement step. Instead of inserting each graft with forceps, the team loads it into the hollow needle of an implanter pen and pushes it into the scalp. With a sharp implanter, the pen makes the incision and places the graft in one motion; with a dull implanter, grafts are placed into small incisions made beforehand.

Where the implanter pen comes from

Implanter pens were developed in South Korea. The “Choi implanter” and the KNU implanter, named after Kyungpook National University, were designed for the straight, thick hair common in East Asian patients. A 2001 study in Dermatologic Surgery that used the KNU implanter reported that about 92% of transplanted hairs were growing at six months and about 90% at 12 months, in Korean patients.

A leading hair transplantation textbook notes that implanters may reduce crushing, squeezing and bending of grafts during placement, which matters because FUE grafts have less protective tissue around the follicle. It also notes trade-offs between sharp and dull implanters.

Advantages and trade-offs of DHI

Possible advantagesTrade-offs
Incision and placement in one step (with a sharp implanter)Packages often cover fewer grafts than standard FUE
Some clinics offer it for adding density between existing hairs and for unshaven proceduresUsually more expensive than standard FUE
Less squeezing and bending of grafts during placement, according to a leading textbookEach pen must be reloaded for every graft
Can be used with grafts from FUE or strip harvestingPublished head-to-head comparisons with forceps placement are limited

Published evidence does not show that one placement method grows more hair than the others when each is performed well. What matters most is careful planning, gentle graft handling and the experience of the team.

How much does DHI cost in Turkey?

All-inclusive DHI packages at the Ministry-authorized clinics whose prices we track cost $3,690–$8,980 (€3,290–€8,000) in November 2026, usually for 1,500–3,500 grafts. Higher-priced packages often include more senior doctor involvement, more hotel nights and extra treatments. Flights and travel insurance are not included.

Ask for a written quote that lists the graft count, who performs each stage, hotel nights, transfers, medication and follow-up. See our Turkey hair transplant cost guide for prices by technique and country.

DHI recovery and results

Recovery after DHI is the same as after FUE. You go back to your hotel the same day, the clinic usually checks the grafts and gives the first wash within a day or two, and crusts clear over the following days. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that transplanted hairs fall out between two and eight weeks after surgery, the area may look thinner around month three, and most people see results between six and nine months, with some taking up to 12 months.

As with any surgery, ask your doctor about possible side effects, such as swelling, infection, numbness or scarring, and how they would be handled after you return home. For a day-by-day timeline and aftercare rules, see our hair transplant recovery guide.

Questions to ask before you book DHI

  • Why do you recommend DHI rather than standard FUE or Sapphire FUE for me?
  • How many grafts can you place by DHI in one session?
  • Who will place the grafts with the implanter pen?
  • Can my procedure be done unshaven, and what does that change?
  • What is included in the package, and what follow-up do you offer?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a DHI hair transplant cost in Turkey?

All-inclusive DHI packages at the Ministry-authorized clinics whose prices we track cost $3,690–$8,980 (€3,290–€8,000) in November 2026, usually for 1,500–3,500 grafts. DHI generally costs more than standard FUE because placing grafts with implanter pens takes longer.

What is the difference between DHI and FUE?

Grafts are harvested the same way in both. In standard FUE, the incisions are made first and grafts are then placed with forceps. In DHI, an implanter pen makes the incision and places the graft in one motion.

Is DHI better than FUE?

Not necessarily. DHI places each graft with an implanter pen, which a leading textbook says may reduce squeezing and bending of grafts, but published evidence does not show that it grows more hair than well-performed FUE. The best choice depends on your hair loss and your doctor’s plan.

Do I need to shave for DHI?

Some clinics offer DHI as an unshaven or partly shaven procedure. Whether this suits you depends on your hair and the size of the area to be treated, so ask your clinic.

How long is recovery after DHI?

Recovery is similar to FUE. Crusts usually clear within the first two weeks, transplanted hairs shed between two and eight weeks, and most people see results between six and nine months, with the full result at around 12 months.
